Three common myths about ANPR

Have you checked out ANPR? Then you probably know that it is no longer a system used only for visitor parking. It's an old myth that it's time to bust. If this is news to you, you should read on. In this blog, we debunk the three most common myths about ANPR.

“The best results and the best customer experience are obtained when using ANPR in facilities that combine contract parking and visitor parking”

— Pelle Sjögren, Mobility46

Not just for visitor parking

By far the most common misconception that we come across when it comes to ANPR is that it is only relevant to visitor parking. This doesn't add up. The finest results and the best customer experience are obtained when using ANPR in facilities that combine contract parking and visitor parking.

For example:

If a customer with a parking permit remains outside their appointment period, this is recorded by the cameras. Instead of the tenant risking a fine and you receiving a loss of income for this period, your tenant will be charged a visitor fee for the period. The charge is automatically added to the regular monthly invoice, without any manual overwriting from you or the customer.

Here you can read more about the benefits of using ANPR in facilities with contract parking.

Suitable for both garage and surface parking

Another common myth we hear is that ANPR would only work in parking garages. However, this is not true. The truth is that ANPR can be installed in virtually any facility - in garages as well as on outdoor surface parking. The only thing to keep in mind is that there needs to be a clear entrance and exit, because this is where the cameras that record the vehicles that use the facility are installed.

“It's a certain investment — but it's absolutely a worthwhile investment to take!”

— Pelle Sjögren

An investment that pays for itself

The last myth we need to sort out is that ANPR schemes are expensive. And it is true that the installation itself can involve a relatively high cost, since ANPR cameras have historically been quite expensive. However, we see two clear trends affecting the cost of investment:

  1. ANPR cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper.
  2. ANPR technology - the intelligence that identifies the registration number - has long been built into the camera. Now it is moving into the cloud, allowing it to choose cheaper cameras for its system. This makes the whole ANPR system much more cost effective.

In addition to the fact that the investment cost is on the way down, we must not forget to take into account the business values that ANPR creates. Such as, for example, that:

  • Your revenue from parking increases, as you get full control of and charge everyone who uses your garage - contract parkers as well as visitors.
  • ANPR reduces your running costs because you no longer have the same need for security personnel.
  • The cameras keep track of exactly how the plant is being used - hour by hour - giving you invaluable data and statistics. You can use this information to develop your parking business and increase your revenue.

Sum summary: it is a certain investment, but it is absolutely a worthwhile investment to take!
